Our Community Priorities

Solutions from our Community of Support

We can improve the quality of life for people living with dementia in our province, especially those individuals living in underserved and rural communities. Our starting point is four priorities that our community of support has identified. With the proper capacity and investment, they will make a significant impact on people’s lives.

Putting the quality of life for people living with dementia first

The quality of life for people living with dementia and their care partners can be improved and sustained by being connected to services as soon as possible. That means a timely diagnosis and access to the proper post-diagnostic services.  We need to improve access to timely diagnosis that is communicated in a compassionate manner and includes support linking people to appropriate services immediately following a diagnosis.

Supporting people with dementia to live well at home

People living with dementia and their care partners want to stay in their own homes and communities for as long as possible. Sixty per cent of people with dementia live in their own homes and communities. People with dementia can live well at home with proper support. We need to increase supports and services, like home care, adult day programs, respite and education for people living with dementia and family caregivers.

Giving care partners the knowledge they need to better support the person with dementia and themselves

Improving support for care giving will improve the health outcomes of the care partner and ensure a better quality of life for the person with dementia.  We need to increase education so care partners can better manage responsive behaviours such as changes in mood, personality and behaviour including getting lost, depression, frustration, anxiety, and nighttime/sleep disturbances.

We can reduce the rate of dementia through prevention

Over 40 per cent of dementias are preventable, making individual risk reduction one of the best investments we can make to reduce the impact of dementia. We need to increase access to information on reducing risk and delaying the onset of dementia by addressing modifiable risk factors through evidence-based lifestyle changes.
